This project explores a Japanese-inspired garden designed for a very steep, multi-terraced site with significant level changes.

The main challenge was to transform a complex, highly vertical landscape into a coherent, expressive environment while softening the visual impact of retaining structures.
The design combines elements of naturalistic landscape composition with Japanese garden principles.
Vertical retaining walls are visually integrated using upright tree trunks and sculptural vertical forms, which echo the natural rhythm of the site and reduce the perceived height of the terraces.

These vertical accents are balanced by horizontal layers of artificial rock, creating a clear dialogue between vertical and horizontal elements.
Red Japanese maples introduce strong seasonal accents and serve as key focal points within the composition.

Water elements add movement and sound, reinforcing the sense of depth and guiding the visitor’s eye through the terraced landscape.

Moss-like ground covers, stone arrangements, and carefully placed boulders create a layered foreground, middle ground, and background, enhancing the spatial experience from multiple viewpoints.

The result is a multi-layered garden that blends Japanese aesthetics with natural landscape expression, transforming a challenging terrain into a calm, immersive, and visually rich environment.
