Japanese Koi Pond

A refined koi pond designed as a standalone water feature, inspired by traditional Japanese landscape principles.
The composition is built around clarity, balance and controlled simplicity. The water surface is kept calm and reflective, allowing the pond to function as a visual anchor within the space — even without a fully developed surrounding garden.
The pond is structured with multiple depth zones, including a shallow area designed to bring fish closer to the surface.
This creates a clear, immersive viewing experience, where koi can be observed almost as in a natural aquarium. The edge treatment is intentionally varied.
In some areas, stone defines the boundary with precision, giving the water a framed and architectural quality.
In others, the transition is softened — with planting and lawn approaching the water directly, creating a more natural and relaxed interface.

Subtle elevation changes are introduced around the pond to enhance depth and perception.
Even within a limited area, this allows the water feature to feel layered and spatially complete.

A traditional tsukubai fountain is integrated as both a functional and atmospheric element.
It introduces a secondary point of interaction — a place that invites a pause, where the sound of water contrasts with the stillness of the pond.
The pond is designed to be experienced from key viewing points, including the terrace and interior spaces of the house.
This ensures that the water remains a constant presence — not only as a feature, but as part of everyday life.
The result is a self-sufficient water environment — a compact yet complete composition that brings structure, movement and a distinct atmosphere to the space.
