Rainforest Garden is a multi-level shaded landscape created on a steep slope with four terraces.
The key challenge of the site was the height difference and the visual pressure created by retaining walls.
To soften this verticality, we designed a system of vertical landscape structures inspired by the natural forms of tree fern trunks.
These elements work both structurally and visually: they break down the scale of the retaining walls and transform them into living, planted surfaces.
The vertical structures were planted with a variety of ferns and shade-tolerant species, creating a layered rainforest effect.
Different fern types were combined with groundcovers and accent plants that periodically flower, adding subtle seasonal variation without disrupting the calm atmosphere of the garden.
Orchids were introduced as living accents, integrated into the vertical compositions. They enhance the sense of a natural rainforest environment and bring moments of delicate flowering into the shaded space.
The garden unfolds gradually across the terraces, with each level perceived at a different depth and scale.
Moss-covered stones, natural rock formations, and dense planting create a cool, immersive microclimate typical of a rainforest understory.
The result is a quiet, multi-layered garden where relief, vertical planting, and shade-loving vegetation work together to neutralize the steep terrain and transform it into a balanced, immersive landscape experience.
